If there’s one thing coaches have in common, it’s a love of learning.
Many of us are drawn to coaching because we’re naturally curious. We read books, attend workshops, pursue certifications, listen to podcasts, and explore new frameworks. We believe in growth, not only for our clients but for ourselves.
At the same time, the pace of change can feel relentless. Artificial intelligence is reshaping how we work. Leadership challenges continue to evolve. New research and ideas emerge every day. It’s easy to feel as though we’re always one article, one course, or one certification behind.
Yet perhaps the goal isn’t to learn everything.
The most effective coaches aren’t necessarily those who consume the most information. They are the ones who thoughtfully discern what matters, integrate what is useful, and apply it in service of their clients.
Lately, I’ve noticed something in my own practice. While I continue to seek out new ideas, I also find myself returning to materials I studied years ago. Concepts that once felt theoretical now carry deeper meaning. Frameworks I haven’t referenced in some time suddenly become exactly what a client needs. Experiences accumulated over years of coaching provide insights that no new certification alone could replace.
It has reminded me that growth as a coach isn’t only about acquiring new knowledge. It’s also about deepening our understanding of what we already know.
As lifelong learners, we can hold two truths at once. We can remain open to new ideas while trusting the wisdom we’ve earned through study, reflection, and experience. Curiosity keeps us growing. Reflection helps us integrate. Together, they allow us to stay current without feeling compelled to chase every new trend.
As you consider your own development, perhaps the question isn’t simply, “What do I need to learn next?” It might also be, “What knowledge, experience, or insight is ready to be revisited and applied in a new way?”
Sometimes our next breakthrough isn’t found in something new. Sometimes it’s found in seeing something familiar with fresh eyes.

Loretta Diez Coaching Training Scholarship
ICF Minnesota is on a mission to promote the development of a diverse community of coaches dedicated to serving others inclusively and equitably. One way we strive to do this is through our Loretta Diez Coaching Training Scholarship to help make becoming a coach financially easier.
We established the Loretta Diez Coach Training Scholarship in honor of Loretta Diez, a former ICF Minnesota coach and board member who passed away in 2024. Loretta exemplified the character traits we wish to honor, celebrate, and embody. She was paralyzed in a car accident at the age of 22 and her attitude, accomplishments, contributions, and approach to life inspire us to pursue our dreams with courage, tenacity, resilience, honesty, kindness, humor, integrity and hope.
Through this scholarship we hope to honor her life and help usher in the next generation of incredible coaches. The nomination window is now open and will close on July 24, 2026.
If you or anyone you know would like to apply, please apply here or reach out with any questions to Presidentelect@icfminnesota.org. | | Welcome June New Members!
