In 1954, our founder, M.A “Mort” Mortenson, laid a foundation for the company where coaching as a leadership style was an expectation. Today, Mortenson has doubled down on their commitment to coaching by implementing a rigorous and sophisticated approach to operationalizing coaching. As a result, his legacy has evolved into a core aspect of Mortenson culture and a driver for the future of how we will best serve our team members, communities, and customers.

Mortenson was awarded with the ICF Minnesota Prism Award at the 2022 ICF Minnesota Awards Ceremony September 27 at the Metropolitan Ballroom. The Prism Award recognizes and celebrates organizations who have created excellence and enhanced effectiveness through their commitment to coaching. It is ICF Minnesota’s highest honor for organizations that demonstrate how their coaching initiatives help shape organizational culture with discernible and measurable positive impacts.
Mortenson was founded in 1954 by M.A. Mortenson, Sr. and in 1969, M.A. “Mort” Mortenson took over leadership of the company. Mort was an inspired visionary who valued people and community, as much – if not more than – he did business outcomes. His beliefs shaped a philosophy which guides the organization and underpins a values system focused on building a better world – not just a bigger building. Mort laid a foundation for the company where coaching as a leadership style was an expectation. Today, Mortenson has doubled down on their commitment to coaching by implementing a rigorous and sophisticated approach to operationalizing coaching. As a result, Mort’s legacy has evolved into a core aspect of Mortenson culture and a driver for the future of how the company will best serve its team members, communities, and customers.
Danielle Paulson, Director, Leader Development, accepted the ICF MN Prism Award for Mortenson. She stated, “We are honored to receive this award. At Mortenson, every team member is considered a leader and because of that, we invest in every team member and support their ability to be their best self. Whether by building strong conversation skills, instilling the importance of a coach approach to communication, or leveling up on coaching as a culture lever and leadership cornerstone. Because “when we lead as the best version of ourselves, we leave the world a better place.”
Robins Kaplan, a national trial law firm, and the Northfield School District, were also recognized for how coaching is making a positive difference within their organizations.
