President's Letter
Coaching For All
This an honest, from the gut letter that is not like my usual president’s letters. It deals with race, ethnicity and culture and I feel moved to share with the chapter. This letter is about Coaching for All!
First a little background. I have loved being a part of ICF Minnesota from the time I joined in 2016. The fact that we are mainly white women was not lost on me, but honestly, I was not moved to start a discussion or question our lack of diversity, it just was and I was okay with that.
As Joan Haan, Chris Schweibel and I researched our next Ignite program in late 2018 with the Alafia Foundation something became crystal clear- we were taking on a coaching opportunity with 7 African American leaders on the north side of Minneapolis and our chapter did not come close to mirroring the diversity of the Alafia Foundation.
I use the word MIRROR because it is my belief that we want our ICF Minnesota Chapter to MIRROR what we want for our society. To me and others I have spoken with it means that all ethnicities, races and cultures are able to access coaching AND that we have coaches from all ethnicities, races and cultures joining and participating it our ICF Minnesota chapter. This clarity of wanting ICF to mirror what we want our society to look like is what led us to start the MIRROR Leadership Team for ICF Minnesota. This team will be looking at how ICF MN offers coaching to all and cultivates a community of coaches from all ethnicities, races and cultures. Below Shawn Moore, one of our board members and the Mirror Team Chair clarifies more about what this team is doing.

Hello My name is Shawn R. Moore, and I believe words are important! Words are made up of letters and letters are nothing more than symbols. When we place these symbols in a particular order, just like all symbols we are taken back to the meaning of the symbols. Imagine cave painting taking us back to a time that was. When we create and use words, we say something about who we are and what we believe. Hello my name is Shawn R. Moore, and I’m also an anthropologist. I’m telling you this because the words that make up the ICF Minnesota Vision/Mission statement are also words that matter.

Hello my name is Shawn R. Moore and I’m am African American Man, who is passionate about contributing to the greatness of others. I am also concerned that folks who are underrepresented and people of color are not able to gain access to opportunities like great coaching or even pursue coaching as a vocation. Because of this I have committed to joining the newly formed Mirror Leadership Team.
The Mirror Leadership Team is a group of Coaches/Trainers/and Instructors who committed to task of equity and diversity within the field of Coaching, coaching programs, and coaching resources! As I said before words are important, please allow me to introduce you to the letters. that make up words. that point you to the heart of our concern:

Vision: Coaching is available to all people of ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds in greater Minnesota and surrounding areas.
Mission: To Cultivate a community of diverse coaches for advancing the coaching profession through professional development, networking and adherence to ICF professional and ethical standards.
Hello my name is Shawn R. Moore and I am a Doctoral candidate who is also a coaching student at Learning Journeys. I share in this task with Trish Perry - President ICF MN, Jaton White - Consultant and Manager, Jennie Antolak - President of Learning Journey’s International School of coaching, and Vilay Ly Angeles - Mortgage Loan Officer. We are also looking to add 6-8 more coaches of color to the team and welcome any recommendations. We have started the work by creating a 4-prong approach of:
Invitation: We are inviting folks from diverse backgrounds to explore coaching
Access: What information is out there that can be passed along to areas that are under served as it relates to coaching?How do we give these folks access?
Resources: What books, webinars, speakers, articles, education can be shared to highlight coaching and diversity
Retention: How do we retain folks of color in an almost homogeneous environment like coaching?
We deeply believe that the field of coaching in Minnesota should mirror the beauty and creativity of the ever-increasing diversity in Minnesota. We look forward to working with you, growing with you, and standing up with you as it relates to co-creating a more diverse equitable coaching field.
Hello my name is Shawn R. Moore, the Chair of the Mirror Leadership Team and I want to remind you that words are important, because words tell others who you are and what your passion is about; what you intend to do. If you are wondering why I keep telling you my name, that’s because the letters of my name are symbols, which become words, and those words mean something. The Mirror Leadership Team is about increasing the awareness of Letters that get overlooked, words that are marginalized, so people can be introduced in a bold new way to the world of coaching.

ICF Global Change Announcement
Many of you listened to the Zoom call in the past couple of weeks regarding ICF Global’s announcement of changes that are taking place. Many of you, including Deb and I, who were at the conference, had questions and didn’t really understand the announcement. Matt Varney, our regional rep did a great job explaining it.
ICF Global is taking steps to become an even better, more effective ICF.
Currently under the ICF Family sits 2 organizations that have separate staffs and boards:
1. ICF Global
2. ICF Foundation
ICF will be breaking off 3 additional organizations to be more transparent and more effective:
3. Credentialing will become its own organization under the ICF Family.Credentialing will meet ISO standards.It is important that it be separate so there is never any question that ICF credentialing is objective and non-biased.
4. Program Accreditation will also become a separate organization under the ICF Family.Accreditation will also meet ISO standards.It is important to be separate from the main coaching organization to be certain to be viewed as objective and non-biased.
5. Thought Leadership Institute which is where all of the research, focus groups, innovations, trends in coaching, etc. will be housed.ICF Global is very excited about this as they have partnered with some major universities and organizations to do some exciting projects.Again, this will be separate organization with a separate staff and board.
All of this is in the beginning stages so details are still being worked out, but we wanted to let you know what was happening as soon as we were clear! We will keep you updated as more details are made available.

Something New - Gaston Award Nomination Opportunity!
We are adding something new to make it easy for our members to nominate a fellow coach for the annual Gaston Award. Starting in February at every Speaker Series and Coaching Connection event we will have a special card that can be filled out with your nomination. The card will include the criteria. on the front and the nomination information on the back. There will be a special box for you to place your nomination card in. Our intention is to ensure that everyone has significant time and chance to nominate someone that exemplifies the true nature of the coaching profession. The following is the criteria used to select the Gaston Award winner:
Criteria for Gaston Award Recipient
1. Holds a coaching credential that meets one of the following:
• ICF-issued credential
• Certification from an ICF-accredited coaching school
• Certification from a professional coaching program within an ICF-accredited educational institution
2. Demonstrates clear and strong leadership for the advancement of the coaching profession.
3. Demonstrates integrity through professionalism and selfless service.
4. Has been an active member of ICF Minnesota for three or more years and continues to contribute uniquely to ICF Minnesota’s growth.

PROGRAM: Whether a client or a coach, understanding and developing Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a critical component of personal well-being and success. But how can coaches use the knowledge of Emotional Intelligence to enhance their coaching effectiveness? Lisa Griebel, President of Crescendo Inc. Lisa Griebel is President of Crescendo Inc., a Minneapolis based performance-consulting firm committed to the growth and development of healthy organizations. Helping individuals and organizations realize their Emotional Intelligence (EI) and leadership potential through coaching and training is a primary focus of Lisa's practice.
As an MHS (Multi Health Systems) certified EQ-i2.0/EQ 360 Master Trainer, Lisa has administered more than 2500 EQ-i® assessments world-wide. She has certified more than 400 coaches to analyze, interpret and debrief the EQ-I (the first validated assessment to measure emotional and social intelligence).
Additionally, she has served as an adjunct organizational leadership instructor at St. Mary's University and is certified to facilitate the Dependable Strengths Process and Peer Coaching. Lisa has a Master of Education degree in training and organization development from the University of Minnesota, has earned her 2nd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and serves as Vice President of the Rein in Sarcoma Board of Directors.
Robin Stubblefield Owner/Principal Coach & Consultant of Vitalize Consulting LLC
Robin is an International Coach Federation (ICF) certified coach with 13+ years combined career and leadership development and coaching experience. She has worked with leaders, high potential talent and new and working parent professionals in manufacturing, healthcare, government, professional and financial services, and higher education. Robin is passionate about assisting her clients to assess and leverage their talents, make purposeful connections to desired outcomes, and create development plans that propel them in their career and leadership development.
Coaching from an appreciative, strengths-based mindset, Robin uses methodologies grounded in positive psychology, neuroscience, strengths development, and emotional intelligence. Robin holds a M.A. in Educational Psychology and a B.A. in Psychology and is certified in multiple assessments including the EQ-I 2.0 (Emotional Quotient Inventory), EQ360 and Hogan Assessments. 5 things About Theresa Nutt, Communications Co-Chair
I am from a huge family! I have 7 brothers and sisters who are all married with kids. So, I am the lucky Auntie of 18 beautiful nieces and nephews that I love to play with and spoil. Some might call me a co-conspirator, the jury’s out!
I love fantastical creatures including fairies, unicorns, dragonflies, and mermaids, which is why I love to sketch them. Some of my favorite fantastical books are C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series, the Harry Potter series, and the Fancy Nancy children’s series.
I love to travel nationally and internationally. I am a beach girl at heart, aka A California girl living in a Minnesota world. The only reason I stay is most of the people I love live in Minnesota.
I am a highly creative person at heart. You will catch me creating art, writing anything, creating parties for my favorite little peeps, singing for fun, and hitting local theater shows and art galleries everywhere I go.
My own journey of living with a clinical condition has driven my passion to transform healthcare. I do quite well because I make lifestyle choices that sustain and nurture me which is why I love helping others do the same in their own lives. And it’s why I am busy working to change the healthcare system on a larger scale.

Book Review
Callings by Gregg Levoy
This book is an amazing look at life purpose and finding our deepest inner calling. I especially appreciate the many stories of how people found and followed their callings, how to avoid the common myths and pitfalls that make it hard to follow your calling, and other tips to help you navigate the journey. It first helped me realize that there are different kinds of calls and different ways of noticing that we are being called. Second, as a coach I love all the questions throughout that helps the reader take an individual journey with the material. And third, it helps you translate your call into action. Who doesn’t need help with that last one?
